"To know one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
SunEnergy Power International (SunEPI) was established as a nonprofit public benefits company organized as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2006. No longer an active organization, this website serves as a resource for past projects and a portal for supporters to become familiar with other like-minded organizations.
It is our hope at SunEPI to encourage the support of the partnering organizations and Project Engineers with whom we've worked in the past who design systems, train local teams of technicians, and implement projects in the areas with the most need. It is our collective vision to promote an increased quality of life in remote, rural regions of the world through the use of renewable energy. We strongly encourage you to contribute to the Solar Energy International (SEI) Walt Ratterman Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund will allow people from developing countries to attend SEI workshops to bring crucial solar electricity knowledge back to their communities.

The History of SunEPI:
Founded in 2006, SunEPI was a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to assisting in the energy needs of communities throughout the world. We worked solely on the generosity of individual donations and through grants from USAID and other organizations.
Our co-founder and CEO Walt Ratterman had a vision for changing the world through a combination of active and passive involvement in remote, rural areas of countries that are facing immense social and infrastructure challenges. Often known as a renegade, Walt wanted to empower people to tap into and use renewable energy resources by using a bottom-up, grassroots approach. Not satisfied with simply showing up, building a PV unit and hoping for the best, our philosophy has been to teach the users of these units how to maintain them for future, continued and sustained use.
During our existence as an active organization, we worked in over 30 countries including Burma, Haiti, Rwanda, and Ecuador. The majority of this work was done by Walt.
In January 2010 the earthquake in Haiti tragically took Walt’s life along with hundreds of thousands of others’. The anniversary of this event caused us to re-examine our mission and our capabilities. With that in mind, we came to realize that we reached a crossroads at SunEPI, and that without Walt as a driving force, it was a very different organization.
Therefore, our team of Board directors, Project Engineers, and the Ratterman family decided to close this chapter of SunEnergy Power International. Walt inspired each of us, and will remain in our hearts as we travel through life.
