Burma
Together with Knightsbridge International and Border Green Energy Team (BGET), we have several ongoing projects on the Thai/Burma border, and
inside Burma itself. In 2003, we started a program to equip the mobile
health clinics of the Karen people in Burma with small solar systems.
Since then, we have provided training and equipment to 35 of the
mobile health clinics in the Karen State. In 2007, we expanded our
reach to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and referral clinics with
much larger systems. BURMA HOSPITAL REPORT. This reach has only grown
further.
2008 was an ambitious and successful year. That fall, we provided
training and solar systems for the Free Burma Rangers (FBR) medical
and human rights training facility. FBR outfits over 40 mobile health
teams and provides medical services to five ethnic groups currently
the target of ethnic cleansing in Burma. For more information: FREE
BURMA RANGERS REPORT. During this trip, we were also able to work
with World Aid in powering a communications facility near the
Thai/Burma border, thanks to a generous donation of panels from AEE
Solar and Solar Energy International. For more information: BURMA
WORLD AID REPORT
In 2009, our project included the provision of energy services for two more clinics and an exciting new project – the provision of energy for a computer training center. For more information: BURMA REPORT 2009
The people in this area recognize that despite the continuous
oppression and abuse, in order to equip their youth with the skills
necessary to help their people, they need to have the educational
advantages that come with a computer training center. We provided
energy systems to equip the very first such center in the Karen State
of Eastern Burma. The energy will support the continuous use of 12
computers that will be used train upper level students in a variety of
skills that are needed in this area.
In addition to the solar systems, Knightsbridge supports the supply of much needed medical supplies and equipment to theses areas. Additionally, through Knightsbridge, we are able to provide training in specific areas of medical expertise needed by the medics there.
In November 2010, SunEPI helped fund two more clinics that were implemented by our partner Border Green Energy Team, led by BGET Director and SunEPI Project Engineer, Salinee Tavaranan.
