Our continued work in Haiti is dedicated to our CEO, Walt Ratterman, and his Haitian colleague, Herbert Kanzki, both tragic victims of the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010. Rest in peace, dear ones.
Our involvement in Haiti began in 2007, when we participated in some energy assessments of health care energy systems country wide, with USAID. This initial assessment resulted in several training sessions and installations at 7 health care facilities in northern Haiti to date. Another 7 or 8 facilities are now in the planning stages.
This USAID program has been expanded, and in August 2009, SunEPI began working with PA Consulting group to implement a multi-country, multi-year program aimed at improving energy services for health care. The first target country is Haiti where we will greatly expand our activities both in training and project implementations. Project Engineers Christopher Freitas and Carol Weis are continuing the work that Walt Ratterman started.
Additionally, SunEPI has been continuing its relationship with Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) and Partners in Health (PIH) in Haiti. In September (2009) SunEPI led a partnership that included support from manufacturers and donor agencies where SunEPI and SELF worked together to provide the first solar powered hospital system for PIH in Haiti, at Boucancarre.
